plans, projects, lessons, students,
and now everything has started. actually not yet, the classes will start on 15th Sept. i have something in my mind, i would like to implement a class project, for this i will require students to form blogs and use them to communicate with the rest of the class and with me... but i have not thought of the details yet. do you have any ideas, comments? or any one of you planning to implement something like that? i am curios to hear your opinions...

hi everybody, what have you been doing? it is nearly the end:( everybody must be busy with the last things to be done, dormitories will be left, things will be packed and our "balo" is getting closer:) besides some of us are studying hard for kpds and i wish good luck to them:) and i wanted to ask you how will we get our diploma. do you have an idea?

hi everybody,
i know i was not around lately. i was rather busy:) i was dealing with my portfolio, i was preparing it and it is nearly finished. we will graduate soon and be teachers (most of us:)) and i was thinking of our first day at work. i think i will be very anxious.. maybe my hands and voice will shake. although we have been teaching at METU College, i do not think that i will be as relaxed as i have been at METU College. what do you think? how will you feel when you are really a teacher and alone with your students in the class?

sorry i was not around for a week, cause i was too busy:)
today we made our assessed teaching too. it was generally good but i will not talk about it. i want to mention a little story Nurdan Hoca told today. it is related to an autistic child, after one of his teachers tells him that Atatürk is not dead, actually he is living in us, the child has stopped drinking water. when they ask the child the reason he says that if he drinks water Atatürk may drown, and therefore he will not drink water. how would the reaction of his teacher be? what would he say?
when he learns this, he calls the boy and tells him that Atatürk is a really good swimmer and he will not drown.
could you think of such a solution? could you also take a look at the issue from the point the child sees it?

what are we teaching?

hi everybody,
last week when neşe was going to teach, the students got very happy and said "hurrrayyy, we dont have a lesson today, we will play games" and the same thing happened today when they learned that i was going to teach. dont think that they were the same students, no. neşe and i practiced in different classes and both classes are of the opinion that we are not teaching English but we are playing games instead.
what do you think? how can we make them understand that they are also learning English while playing those games and practicing colorful and enjoyable activities? or can we do that?
our mentor teacher once said that, if she would include songs and games in the lessons often, then the students would tell everywhere that they are not learning English but playing games in the class, and she also mentioned that she would have difficulty with the parents on this issue.
what do you think?

hi everybody,
i have a question: what would you do if you had no visual or technological aid available at your class? i have heard from a friend of mine in the other section that their mentor teacher was in that condition. yet what surprised me is that he has been teaching in this way for many years (he is an old teacher) but his students even deal with phonetic transcriptions of the words. although he does not bring any visual aid to the class he teaches vocabulary items very effectively as my friend says. how can he do that? can you make a guess? or how would you do that if you did not have any pictures, printer, computer or projector? (is it too hypothetical to ask that question? if so just let me know)

need for attention...

Hi all,
today i noticed something actually we noticed smth with Neşe, that one of the lazy students in our class (Akant) tries to get attention of his friends and teacher... you know him i have written about him before, he seems to be in need of attention, he said that they had 'yenidünya' for the 'beslenme saati' but no one cared for him. he asked whether 'yenidünya' grew on trees or not, but no one answered, Neşe answered his question and he said that he would grow 'yenidünya' trees that he liked this fruit very much, but no one cared for him again, some of his friends told him to shut up and the teacher also, then he got silence..but it seemed as if he was trying to express his feelings... what do you think? does a teacher need to pay attention to her/his students in situations like that? would you pay attention to your students like Akant?

first of all, sorry for that ı have been away for some time, because ı went to see my nephew. you know he is 1 month old and ı was very enthusiastic about that visit, he is very sweet :)) ı am planning to teach him english from very early ages. ı dont know how ı will do that but ı will wait and see in my next visit.

I know that everybody is trying to find suitable jobs to fulfill their needs... yet ı want to mention the ÖYP system since it confuses me these days. ı want to have a masters degree and in order to that ı need to work somewhere, ı think that most of us want to have a masters degree and most of us know the conditions of ÖYP, if you dont know this is the link: http://www.sbe.metu.edu.tr/oyp.html

Akant is doing his homeworks and attending the lesson actively... hurraayyyy:) but I do not know what led to this behavior change, yet our teacher still does not give positive reinforcement. as I have learned from our mentor teacher Akant's mum has not been by him for some time and this might have caused the laziness in him, I think. another thing I want to mention about the relationship between the students and the teacher. I do not think that a teacher should form too strong a relationship with his/her students but I also do not think that it is necessary to mention that you are not their mum to the students. our mentor teacher, out of anger, told the students that none of them was her own child.. can I take your opinions on this issue plz :)

hi everybody,
i think i have caught a good point in the class i have been observing, and i think that it will go on like a serie :) the title is "Akant's Affairs" ta taaaa.....
i have mentioned about him in the sessions we are talking about our observations. the reason i am mentioning about him here is that i want to hear your comments. he is a lazy boy does not do his homeworks as you know. but our mentor teacher is getting too much angry with him and she is teasing with him throughout the lesson which makes him more silent. the question is whether Akant will go on to be a lazy boy because of this attitude of the teacher or in contrast will he get motivated and start studying? the answer will come in the following weeks :))

Actually I am very talkative and thus you know nearly everything about me:) but hmmm... let me see...
one thing may be that I cannot ride a bicycle:)
another thing is that I would not eat ice cream cones when I was a child because I was believing a rumor told among children that ice cream sellers cleaned their ears with the ice-cream cones before selling them... funny huh:)
thirdly, when at home I still play child games with my brothers in the street...
another thing may be that 2 weeks ago I fell while walking towards Çarşı, and my back still aches due to that I cannot run or walk fast but I am still too ignorant to see a doctor.
and lastly, YES!!! I watch cartoons and I like them very much, everyday I watch cartoons otherwise I feel unhappy...

a nice start

Today we had our first experience at METU College and I can say truthfully that it was better than I had expected. Actually I was expecting to see stern faces and teachers yelling at students as I was used to seeing at Resulzade Anatolian High School. But here the situation is completely different, teachers are always smiling and you can hear welcoming "good mornings" from the teachers passing by. The quality of the education is also very high. Those children of 5th grade are speaking English very well. I was astonished. And the teacher we observed was dealing with the class so skilfully that she does not miss anything happening in the class and also deals with everything without spoiling the flow of the lesson. These are my experiences and I just wanted to express them . It is nice to see such an environment :)
